DAY 1 Called to belong to God - Ephesians 1:1–2

1. SCRIPTURE: Ephesians 1:1–2
1. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus, and are faithful in Christ Jesus: 2. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
 
2. OBSERVATIONS :
a.  What did this passage mean to its original audience? 
Ephesus was a bustling, wealthy, port city dominated by the massive Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World). The Christians living there were a tiny minority surrounded by commercialism, pagan worship, and pressure to conform. It wasn't an easy place to live out their faith. They had to go to work, raise their family, and navigate culture in a place that didn't share their values at all. So trying to follow Jesus there probably felt pretty overwhelming at times.

That’s why it meant so much when Paul called them “saints” and “faithful in Christ.” He was basically saying, “Hey, you’re not defined by this city or by everything happening around you. You belong to God. You’re set apart for Him. Your real identity is in Christ, not in Ephesus.”

And when Paul greeted them with “grace and peace,” it wasn’t just a polite hello. It was his way of reminding them that God’s grace was with them right where they lived, and God’s peace was available even in the middle of all the chaos and spiritual tension around them. They really needed to hear that.

They weren’t alone or forgotten. They were connected to God’s global family and to His bigger story. Paul wanted them to know that their faith mattered, their identity mattered, and their calling mattered, even in a tough place like Ephesus.

b. What does this passage reveal about God?

• God is the One who calls and sends. Paul is an apostle “by the will of God.” God chose him, called him, and sent him. 
• God is our father and Lord. 
• God gives us Grace and Peace. He is the Source of true blessing!

c. What does this passage reveal about people?

• We are saints and faithful ones called by God. We have been set apart by God.
• We need fresh supplies of God’s grace for our weaknesses and His peace for our worries.

 3. APPLICATION: What does this passage impact my affections, attitudes and actions?
  I often catch myself tying my self-worth to my performance, my job title, or whether people approve of me. When I fail or get criticized, I feel small and insecure. But today, God reminds me that my identity is a "saint" who is set apart and cherished by God. I am a child of God. My status was granted by "the will of God" and not my own achievements. I want to walk through my week with quiet confidence instead of constantly trying to prove myself.

  I am grateful that I get to receive grace and peace directly from God my Father. Grace is God giving me what I don't deserve for today's tasks, and peace is His calm filling my hearts when life gets loud. So, today, I want my heart to value God’s grace and presence more than worldly comfort. When my soul craves security, I want to run straight to my Heavenly Father rather than trying to fix everything in my own strength.

Lastly, as Paul wished "grace and peace" upon others. I want to choose to respond with gentle grace rather than anger, bringing God's calm into tense moments.


4. PRAYER:
Father, thank You that You call me to belong to You. Thank You that I am a saint, set apart in Christ, loved and known by You. Thank You that grace and peace come from You, not from my situation.

Father God, hold these truths deep in my heart this week. When my mind slips back into trying to prove my worth, gently remind me that I am already cherished, already chosen, and already Your child. When my days get loud and my soul craves peace, draw me straight to Your feet before I try to fix things on my own.

Help me to live as someone who truly belongs to You. Teach me to be faithful where I am, to love Your church as Your family. Let my life today show that I am Yours.
