DAY 17 Serve the Lord in Every Relationship - Ephesians 6:1–9

1. SCRIPTURE: Ephesians 6:1–9
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

5 Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, 6 not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, 7 rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man, 8 knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a bondservant or is free. 9 Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality with him.  

2. OBSERVATIONS :
-  What does this passage reveal about God?

• Through Paul's commands in this passage, we can learn about God's character. These commands connect with Paul's earlier instruction to imitate God (Ephesians 5:1). Unlike imperfect human authorities, God is our loving and just Father who cares for us, guides us in the right way, and shows no favoritism. He desires not merely our obedience but also our growth in faith and wisdom (v. 4). He does not rule through threats or oppression but holds those in authority accountable for how they treat others (v. 9). He also sees and rewards faithful service, regardless of a person's social status (v. 8). 
• Through these passages, we ultimately see Jesus Christ, the perfect image of God and the true human who perfectly reveals God's character. Jesus was the obedient Son, submitting to the Father even to the point of death. He is the Servant who came not to be served but to serve, and the Lord and Master who humbly washed His disciples' feet. Through the cross, Christ reconciles people to God and brings them together as one people, breaking down the dividing wall of hostility.

-  What does this passage reveal about people?

• In the same way that we discovered God's character in this passage, we can also understand our sinful human nature and how we need to be transformed. Unlike God, who leads with love and justice, we often misuse authority, seek our own interests, and treat others unfairly. We may demand obedience without showing care, become harsh toward those under our authority, or serve others only when we expect recognition or reward (vv. 4–6, 9). However, as followers of Christ, we are called to put away selfishness, pride, and favoritism and instead grow in love, humility, and integrity. We must learn to use our authority to nurture others, serve sincerely from the heart, and treat everyone with fairness and respect, remembering that we all serve the same Lord (vv. 6–9).

 3. APPLICATION: What does this passage impact my affections, attitudes and actions?
Throughout my journey through Ephesians, I am reminded that following Jesus means reflecting God's character in every relationship. However, I often become impatient when people do not meet my expectations. I may focus on their mistakes rather than their needs, or become frustrated when I have to give more time and energy than I expected. But God's character reminds me that true love seeks the good of others. Jesus demonstrated this love by serving others and giving Himself for them.

Through this passage, God reminds me that He calls me not only to obey His commands but also to grow in His love, justice, humility, and care for others. As I look to Jesus Christ, who perfectly reveals God's character, I see both the example I am called to follow and the Savior who transforms my heart. I pray that the Holy Spirit will soften my heart and help me respond with patience, compassion, and understanding, especially toward the people closest to me.


4. PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, thank You for teaching me to reflect Your character in every relationship. Please soften my heart and help me grow in love, patience, humility, and compassion. Through the Holy Spirit, help me serve others sincerely, treat everyone with fairness and respect, and follow Your example in my daily life. May all my relationships bring glory to You.
