DAY 15 Walk in Wisdom - Ephesians 5:15–21

1. SCRIPTURE: Ephesians 5:15–21
15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.  

2. OBSERVATIONS :
-  What did this passage mean to its original audience?
"Walk" was Paul's key word. His readers had already heard it in 4:1, 5:2, and 5:8. Verse 15 continues the thread: after walking in love and as children of light, believers should walk wisely.

Believers sang together. Verse 19 mentions "psalms and hymns and spiritual songs." Scholars discuss the exact differences between the three, but the picture is clear: believers gathered to sing to the Lord and to encourage each other. Early churches often met in homes (for example, 1 Cor 16:19, written from Ephesus), so this singing was likely close and personal.

Mutual submission would have stood out. Roman society was strongly hierarchical, and status and honor mattered a great deal. When Paul tells all believers to submit "to one another" (v.21), he describes a community that runs on humility, with Christ as the reason. Verse 21 also leads into Paul's teaching about households in 5:22–6:9.

-  What does this passage reveal about God?

•  God wants us to understand His will and gives us His Spirit to live it out. Paul tells us to "understand what the will of the Lord is" (v.17) and to "be filled with the Spirit" (v.18).
• God desires a worshipful, grateful, and loving community (vv. 19–21). He calls believers to worship Him, give thanks, and serve one another in reverence for Christ.

-  What does this passage reveal about people?

• We can walk "as unwise" or "as wise" (v.15), so we need to look carefully at how we live. Because we are God's beloved children and light in the Lord (5:1, 8), we are called to walk wisely. We are to make the best use of the time (v.16), be filled with the Spirit (v.18), sing and encourage one another (v.19), and give thanks to God the Father always and for everything (v.20).
  
  

 3. APPLICATION: What does this passage impact my affections, attitudes and actions?
a. How does this change my attitude?
I often catch myself scrolling aimlessly on social media or letting time slip by without any eternal focus. I want to stop living on autopilot and become more intentional about my choices.

b. How does this change my affections (what I love / feel)?
This passage reminds me that only the Spirit can truly fill me (v.18). I often reach for something to calm me down, cheer me up, or help me escape. I want to want Him more. I also want my heart to be a place where worship (v.19) and gratitude (v.20) come up naturally.

c. How does this change my actions?
I'll look honestly at how I spend my time, especially on my phone. I'll choose one block of time to give to something that really matters, such as prayer, Scripture, or time with someone I love. When I feel stressed, tired, or sad, I'll pray, "Holy Spirit, fill me." and I'll play or sing a worship song on my commute or while I work.

4. PRAYER:
Heavenly Father,

Thank You for giving me Your Word and the Holy Spirit to guide me. Please teach me to walk wisely and use my time in ways that honor You. Help me recognize Your will and not be distracted by the values and temptations of the world.

Holy Spirit, fill me each day. Transform my thoughts, desires, and actions so that I reflect the character of Christ. Give me a grateful heart, a joyful spirit, and the humility to love and serve others.

When I feel uncertain, guide me. When I am tempted, strengthen me. When I become distracted, help me return to You.
