1. SCRIPTURE
19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” 24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25 They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
2. OBSERVATIONS :
- John tells the Jewish leaders that he is not the Christ, Elijah, or "the Prophet." Instead, he humbly says that he is just someone preparing the way for the Lord (vv. 19-21).
- John's purpose is not to seek fame but to lead people to Jesus. He John recognizes that he is fulfilling a role in preparing Israel for the coming Messiah (v. 23).
3. APPLICATION:
John knew his purpose and mission clearly, and he was dedicated to fulfilling it.
I ask myself: What is my purpose and mission as a follower of Jesus? As followers of Jesus, I realized that my purpose is not to be seen or praised, but to serve and point others to Him, just like John did. My role is to make Jesus known and help others experience His love and grace. It’s the heart of what it means to follow Christ!
I’ve also realized that just like John prepared the way for Jesus, my mission as a follower of Jesus is to live in a way that shows His love, share that love with others, and help them get to know Him. Everything I do, say, and choose can be part of that mission. To make it real, I’m going to try to be more intentional in how I treat people, listen with care, and look for chances to share Jesus’ love in simple ways. And I’ll remember to stay humble, always pointing others toward Him.
4. PRAYER:
Dear God,
Thank You for showing me that my purpose as a follower of Jesus is not to seek praise or recognition, but to serve and point others to You. Help me to live in a way that reflects Your love and grace, just like John did. Lord, I pray that You would help me be intentional in my actions, words, and choices. Teach me to listen with care, treat others with kindness, and always look for opportunities to share Your love. Keep me humble and remind me that my mission is to point others toward Jesus.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
