Day 10: 4:6-13 (The Apostles’ Way: Humility and Suffering)

Paul reminds believers not to be proud or judge leaders by human standards, because everything comes from God. He also shows how the apostles suffer and serve quietly, following Jesus with endurance and humility.

1. SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 4:1-5
6 I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another.
7 For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?
8 Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich! Without us you have become kings! And would that you did reign, so that we might share the rule with you!

9 For I think that God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death, because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men.  10 We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. 11 To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are poorly dressed and buffeted and homeless, 12 and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; 13 when slandered, we entreat. We have become, and are still, like the scum of the world, the refuse of all things.

2. OBSERVATIONS :
  •   What did this passage mean to its original audience?
The church in Corinth was a mess of pride. They lived in a culture that valued wealth, eloquent speech, and social standing. They were looking down on Paul because he was poor, traveled on foot, and was often treated like a criminal.
Paul confronts this mindset by holding up the apostles as an example: The apostles lived humbly. They suffered greatly. They did not seek honor, but faithfulness. This would have been shocking. Paul is telling them that true Christian maturity looks like humility, endurance, and love—not power, comfort, or popularity.

  • What does this passage reveal about God?
  • God does not want His people to go “beyond what is written.” God calls His people to humility (v. 6).
  • God is the giver of everything we have (v. 7). Every gift comes from God. This shows God’s grace and generosity, and it removes any reason for boasting.
  • God allows His faithful servants to walk through suffering, weakness, and rejection (v. 13). This reflects the character of Christ, who Himself embraced humility and suffering for the sake of others.

What does this passage reveal about people?
We are prone to pride and comparison (vv. 6–7).
  • Those who truly follow Christ may be misunderstood, criticized, or treated unfairly (vv. 9–13). Still, we are called to reflect Christ through patience, humility, and kindness.

3. APPLICATION: What does this passage impact my affections, attitudes and actions?
  • As I look at the lives of the apostles, I am reminded that God does not promise comfort or applause, but faithfulness. When I am misunderstood, criticized, or treated unfairly, I realize that this is often part of following Christ. Jesus Himself walked the path of humility and suffering. Instead of becoming bitter or defensive, I want my heart to grow softer—to love more, forgive more, and trust God more deeply. When I feel like "the scum of the world" or just plain rejected, I won't quit. I will keep serving others with kindness, just like Jesus did.

This passage also calls me to live differently. I want to stop comparing myself to others and instead be faithful with what God has entrusted to me. When I face difficulty or rejection, I choose patience over pride and kindness over retaliation. I desire my life to reflect Christ, even when it costs me something.

4. PRAYER:
Dear God,
Thank You for reminding me that everything I have comes from You. Help me to walk in humility and not compare myself to others. When I face misunderstanding, criticism, or hardship, help me respond like Jesus—with patience, kindness, and trust in You. Shape my heart to reflect Christ in every situation.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
