12. John 4:43-54 Jesus Heals an Official’s Son

 

43 After the two days he departed for Galilee. 44 (For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.) 45 So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast. For they too had gone to the feast. 46 So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill. 47 When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. 48 So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.” 49 The official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” 50 Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way. 51 As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering. 52 So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.”
53 The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household. 54 This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.

What does this passage reveal about God?

• God's(Jesus’) power is not limited by distance (v. 50).
• “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.” Personally, from my perspective, I believe that John 4:48 should not be viewed simply as a criticism of people seeking miracles, but rather as an acknowledgment that Jesus understood human weakness. While God desires faith rooted in His word, He recognized that people often needed visible signs to believe. This is likely why Jesus performed miracles as signs (v. 54). This perspective helps us grasp the reason and purpose behind the seven signs in the Gospel of John. (Cf. John 20:30-31)
  
  

What does this passage reveal about human nature?

• The official, despite his position and authority, humbles himself to seek Jesus’ help (v. 47).
• Faith grows when people take Jesus at His word—true belief doesn’t always require seeing first (v. 50, 53).
  
  

What did this passage mean to its original audience?

• The official, an outsider and a Gentile, his  response in verse 50 is remarkable because, despite the common tendency to rely on visible signs, he demonstrated extraordinary faith by believing Jesus' word without needing to see any miracles. In a way, his actions highlight the type of faith God desired, which contrasts with the faith of the Jews who needed signs to believe, even though clear signs of the Messiah were given, yet the Jewish religious leaders did not believe Jesus was the Messiah.

How does this passage impact my attitude? 

The The official's faith challenges me to trust Jesus at His word, even when I don’t see immediate results. I often want reassurance or visible signs before fully believing, but true faith means taking Jesus at His word. Instead of doubting, I want to develop an attitude of deep trust in His promises. I also want to grow in my love for Jesus, not because of what He can do for me, but because He is worthy of my trust and worship.

How does this passage challenge my actions?
The official simply obeyed and went on his way (v. 50).  I need to trust God’s guidance and move forward in obedience, even when I don’t see the full picture. I will choose to step out in faith, trusting that God is already at work in ways I may not yet see. 

Dear Jesus,
Thank You for showing me what real faith looks like. I confess that sometimes I look for signs instead of simply trusting in Your word. Help me to have faith like the centurion, who believed You without needing to see proof. Strengthen my trust in You, even when I don’t understand everything. Help me to step out in faith, obeying You with confidence and peace. Let my faith grow stronger each day, and may my trust in You lead others to believe in You as well.
