Day 9: 4:1-5 (Servants of Christ: Trusting God’s Judgment, Not Ours)

- Paul explains that leaders are servants and stewards of Christ, accountable to God alone. Human judgment is limited, but God sees the heart and will judge at the proper time.

1. SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 4:1-5
1 This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.
2 Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.
3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself.
4 For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me.
5 Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.

2. OBSERVATIONS :
  •   What did this passage mean to its original audience?
The Corinthian church was divided and overly focused on leaders—Paul, Apollos, and others. They judged leaders based on speaking ability, personality, and perceived success. Paul corrects this by saying: Leaders are not celebrities, but servants. The church should not put leaders on trial using human standards. God, not people, is the final Judge.

  • What does this passage reveal about God?
     - God is the true Master (v. 1). He is Lord. We live under His authority. Our lives and ministries exist to serve His purposes, not our own.
    - God is the Ultimate Judge. He values faithfulness and sees the heart and will judge rightly (vv. 2-5).

What does this passage reveal about people?
    - We are servants, not owners (v. 1). As servants and stewards of Christ, we do not control our lives or ministries. Our responsibility is faithfulness to what the Master has given us.

    - We judge too quickly and often unfairly (v. 3). People naturally compare, criticize, and evaluate. Even our self-judgment can be flawed, either too harsh or too lenient.

3. APPLICATION: What does this passage impact my affections, attitudes and actions?
  • I am reminded that my worth is not determined by what others think of me—or even what I think of myself. What matters most is being faithful to what God has given me.
  • Since only God sees the heart clearly, I want to be slower to judge others and quicker to extend grace. I don’t have to defend myself or compare myself to others.
  • I will catch myself before I criticize another brother or sister’s motives and ask: “Am I serving Christ with integrity?” “Am I being faithful with what God has given me?”

4. PRAYER:
Dear Lord,
Thank You for reminding me that I am Your servant and steward. Everything I have comes from You, and my life belongs to You.

Forgive me for the times I seek approval from people or judge others too quickly. Teach me to trust Your judgment instead of my own. Help me to be faithful, even when no one notices.  I want to hear Your praise, not the praise of the world.
I place my life, my service, and my reputation in Your hands.
In Jesus’ name,
 Amen.
