DAY 3 Open the Eyes of Our Hearts - Ephesians 1:15–23

Thanksgiving and Prayer
15 For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, 16 I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, 18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20 that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
 
2. OBSERVATIONS :
a.  What did this passage mean to its original audience? 
“Far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.” — Ephesians 1:21

The believers in Ephesus lived in a culture where power, spiritual forces, magic, and the worship of Artemis were very real parts of everyday life. Ephesus was famous for the temple of Artemis, and Acts 19 shows how deeply magic and spiritual practices were connected to the city. When many people believed in Jesus, some of them even publicly burned their expensive magic books because they had turned away from their former practices (Acts 19:18–19). Because of this background, Paul’s words about Christ being “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion” would have been deeply meaningful to them.

So when Paul prays that they would grasp the power that raised Christ and seated Him "far above all rule and authority and power and dominion," it was a direct, comforting answer to real fears they carried. His prayer was saying that the spiritual forces they used to fear or serve are nothing compared to the power now available to them in Christ, who reigns above them all.

Knowing that Christ is the supreme head over all things gave these early believers bold confidence. They didn't need to fear imperial threats or spiritual darkness because Jesus rules over "not only the present age but also the one to come" (v. 21).

For the original audience, this was a powerful reminder:
The things around us may seem powerful, but Jesus is greater.
The things people fear may seem strong, but Jesus is above them.
And the authority of Jesus will never end.

b. What does this passage reveal about God?

• God is the Glorious Father who gives wisdom and He wants us to know Him. (v. 17). He freely imparts the Holy Spirit as a Spirit of wisdom and revelation so we can know Him intimately. God opens the eyes of our hearts (v. 18). 
• God possesses incomparably great power (v. 19–20). He raised Jesus from the dead and seated Him in the highest place of authority, "far above all rule and authority and power and dominion."
•  God placed all things under Christ for the Church (v. 22). God uses His supreme authority to protect, build, and fill His body, the Church.

c. What does this passage reveal about people?

•  Our greatest need is spiritual sight, not just circumstance changes. We tend to focus on outer circumstances, but God cares about our inner vision.
• We are chosen as God's treasure and fullness: We are called His "glorious inheritance" (v. 18), and as the Church, we are "his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way" (v. 23). We are deeply valued and given a high calling.

 3. APPLICATION: What does this passage impact my affections, attitudes and actions?
1. Attitudes — I easily get overwhelmed when looking at my own weaknesses, but I will fix my eyes on the exalted Jesus. Since He is seated far above every rule, authority, power, and title (v. 21), nothing in my life is out of His control. I can replace spiritual dread with steady, calm trust because the power working in me is the same power that emptied the tomb.

2. Affections — I often crave visible proof of success, financial safety, or quick fixes to my problems to feel at peace. I want my deepest desire to match Paul's prayer: "that I may know Him better." I want my heart to treasure my calling, my inheritance, and His power more than any temporary comfort this world offers.

3. Actions — Instead of always asking God to fix my problems or change my circumstances, I want to start praying differently. When I come to God, I want to slow down and say, “Lord, open the eyes of my heart today. Help me see You in this situation. Help me see what You are doing, even when I don’t understand it.”

When I face a situation that makes me feel small, weak, or intimidated  I quickly become worried or discouraged. But today, I want to remind myself who Jesus is. He is not just helping me from a distance. He is the Head over everything, and His resurrection power is at work in me. So when I feel weak, I will tell myself, “I may feel weak, but Jesus is not weak. I may not know what to do, but Jesus is in control. I may not see the way forward, but Jesus is with me.”

4. PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, glorious God of our Lord Jesus Christ,

I pray that You would give me the Spirit of wisdom and revelation so that I may know You better. Please enlighten the eyes of my heart today! Forgive me for the times I get so hyper-focused on my physical problems that I forget the spiritual reality of who You are.

Help me to deeply understand the incredible hope to which You have called me. Remind me that I am Your cherished inheritance, and let my soul rest in Your incomparably great power—the very power that raised Jesus from the dead and seated Him above every power and name.

Open my eyes to see Jesus reigning at Your right hand. Let that vision wash away my fears, shape my choices, and give me boldness to serve You today. In the mighty and exalted name of Jesus, Amen.
